Dysport is a prescription injectable medication that contains the active ingredient botulinum toxin type A. It temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults less than 65 years of age.

At Kiss Aesthetics in Minooka, IL, certified nurse practitioner Kim Burke has expertise in Dysport injections. Keep reading to learn more about how Dysport can help prevent future facial wrinkles.

How does Dysport work?

Dysport is similar to BOTOX®, which also uses botulinum toxin to reduce the appearance of and prevent wrinkles. Botulinum toxin works by blocking the nerve signals that cause muscles to contract. When the muscles that create wrinkles between the eyebrows are temporarily relaxed, wrinkles appear smoother and less severe.

The effects of Dysport typically last for about 3 – 4 months, after which time the treatment will need to be repeated to maintain the desired results.

How does Dysport help prevent future wrinkles?

Dysport is not technically a preventive treatment for wrinkles; rather, it temporarily improves the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults by relaxing the muscles that create wrinkles.

However, preventing the wrinkles that occur when you move your face (dynamic wrinkles) can reduce the possibility of having those lines set in more permanently to become static wrinkles.

The effects of Dysport typically last for about 3 – 4 months, after which the treatment will need to be repeated to maintain the desired results. With regular treatment, some people may notice that the wrinkles between the eyebrows become less severe over time. However, wrinkles will return if the treatment is discontinued.

Preventing wrinkles from forming in the first place is best achieved by adopting a healthy lifestyle that includes a balanced diet, regular exercise, avoiding smoking, and protecting your skin from sun damage by using sunscreen. Additionally, a good skin care routine that includes cleansing, moisturizing, and protecting your skin from UV rays can also help to prevent wrinkles.

Is there anyone who should not use Dysport?

It's important to note that Dysport is a prescription medication and should only be administered by a healthcare professional who has experience with botulinum toxin injections.

Additionally, Dysport should not be used by:

  • Individuals who are pregnant or breastfeeding (since we do not have enough evidence to determine if the medication can harm the fetus or pass through breast milk)
  • Those who have had an allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in Dysport or have a history of dysphagia (difficulty swallowing)
  • Individuals with a history of breathing problems such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • People with certain neurological conditions such as ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), myasthenia gravis, o Lambert-Eaton syndrome
  • Individuals who have a skin infection at the proposed injection site
  • People who are currently taking antibiotics of the aminoglycoside class

It's important to inform your healthcare provider of any medical conditions you have or medications you are currently taking before receiving Dysport treatment, as some conditions or medications may interact with Dysport.
